Heroes episode 1.12 ‘Godsend’ recap

by Grace on January 24th, 2007

Heroes’ Godsend is one brilliant episode. It rode on the excitement that episode 11 (Fallout ) built up and gave viewers a roller coaster ride!

The Petrelli brothers
The episode continued two weeks after the night Jackie got killed. Peter is lying comatose-like in the hospital, but getting flashes of a vision of himself causing New York to explode. Later that day when Simone paid him a visit, Nathan angrily retorted that Peter told him he felt he was absorbing too many powers. Is Nathan still skeptic, or was he too confused to admit that Peter might be right? With Peter getting stronger flashes, the vision was getting clearer - In Peter explodesNew York, all the other heroes are running away from him as Peter’s body became more and more reactive. Then Nathan, (was that a smile or a smirk ) gets closer to Peter and tells him he’s not leaving. Peter saw himself exploding in that vision, just as he came out of the coma screaming.

Claire Bennett
Claire talks to dadClaire acted like she didn’t remember anything happened at the Homecoming. At least that’s what she wanted her dad to believe but as she walked aways she rolled her eyes - the Haitian spared her memory. When she talked to the Haitian in secret, she wanted a chance to talk to Peter, but was warned that he was being watched. So she asked for Zach to get back his memory (and regain the friendship she had treasured just two weeks ago). After all, he was the only one who believed and accepted her for what she was. Her longing to have someone sympathize with her, to know that she wasn’t alone, it was rather agonizing. I don’t know if the Haitian’s words were meant as a comfort : You’re not alone claire but i can’t give back memory it’s not how my gift works… What you can do, what i can do, that is God. Respect that calling.”

Maybe that did get her thinking. The next time we see Claire, she was trying to convince an aloof Zach to videotape her. A seeming repeat of her death-defying fall and Zach’s reactions re-opened a lost friendship. I’m glad. It is just too sad for Claire as a teenager to have to face this alone. Like Hiro needed Ando, Zach was Claire’s shoulder to lean on.

HRG BennettHRG/Mr. Bennett
HRG was able to drug Sylar but they still couldn’t figure out the extent of his powers so Bennett instructs an employee to dig deeper. Is this the only reason why he’s not killed by the powers-that-be that HRG answers to, or are there more sinister plans for Sylar. Now is Sylar really drugged, or is he a willing volunteer to being imprisoned, to get more powers for his own greed?

A SWAT team led by Audrey, and Matt Parkman’s suggestion, raided the Primatech Paper, only to come up with… paper. When Matt asks Mr. Bennett about Sylar, Mr. Bennett plays dumb as The Haitian looks on and a pissed off Audrey tells Matt, “nice going.”

Hiro and Ando.
Hiro and Ando explore the Museum of Natural History in NY in quest of the sword. His powers have been diminishing since Charlie’s death and he believes the sword can restore it.

Hiro swordHe found it on an ancient Samurai belonging to a Japanese legend named Takeo Kinsei (1584 - ). Hiro recalls him from stories as a wild savage with great power who was feared by all of Japan. One day teh warrior found a sword frozen in snow and the moment he held it in his hands, it helped him focus his power and control it.

When ando saw the symbols he recognized it as a combination of characters which meant “great talent” and “Godsend”. Hiro stole the sword with powers that could only slow down time. To his dismay, the sword was only a fake and the original belonged to Lindermann. (Why wasn’t I surprised? That man is behind all sinister tales in this show) (Yes, and that duel with the dinosaur. I don’t know if that was funny or a disappointment. Oh well.)

Niki argues JessicaSanders-Hawkins family
Nikki did turn herself over to police to stop what she believed was Jessica’s killing spree. And yet, how can you control something or someone stronger than you? Every now and then Jessica takes over and hurts or frightens other people. But the last scene got interesting when DL and Micah visited her in jail. When Nikki asked to be allowed to embrace Micah and the guard declined, she started to get agressive and he was about to hit her with the baton. Without any help from Jessica’s powers, Nikki broke it in half. At least I think that wasn’t Jessica but Nikki. Is the consciousness of Nikki being overpowered by Jessica now?

Isaac Mendez
Isaac Mendez The cleaned-up painter is now the magnet that drew several heroes together. Nathan went to his studio with Simone, to find out what really happened to Peter. Suddenly Hiro and Ando appeared with news about the sword’s owner. When Hiro saw Nathan, he recognized him as “Flying Man”. A conversation between them about the exploding man in Isaac’s painting had Nathan thinking he might actually help stop the “bad guy”. Was he referring to Lindermann, or is this pre-empting that vision that Peter had of Nathan standing with him? Simone offers to bring Hiro to Lindermann since as her client, he’s been buying all of Isaac’s paintings. (Suspicion confirmed: Lindermann is behind everything.

Bennet visit SureshMohinder Suresh
One of the most intriguing scenes is Mr. Bennett visiting Mohinder and asking for his help. “I should have come to you a long time ago. who’s on that list is a matter of great importance. Together we can make a difference.” What is bennet’s plan? why did he want mohinder’s help when the guy had no powers at all, and he can just as easily hack into that computer and get the list?

The Invisible Man
Once Peter woke up, he decides to leave as far away as possible from the city. Then he sees someone swiping people’s wallets and his victims seem unaware. When Peter confronts him, he was surprised to find he can actually be seen by this younger man. He is invisible. Has been all these years.

Ted nuclearAnd then there’s Ted. The nuclear guy - perfecting his powers. We’ll see more of him in the next episodes, and maybe team up with a new heroine named Wireless … At least someone’s willing to fight back.

(I’ve never seen a premiere that packed it all in just one hour, with commercials too. The episode leaves you satisfied, yet wanting for more. We’re all definitely coming back again next week. For more .)
