Smallville’s episode 6.18 “Progeny” recap
The amazing Wonder WomanLinda Carter! Having someone as talented as her portray Chloe’s mom, Moira… she upped the ante for the whole cast!
There was a flashback to a young Chloe coming home from school to find that her mom Moira was going on a “vacation”. (If you recall, her mom is in a catatonic state in a mental institution)
So it began with Lex’s car being sideswiped by a monster truck. Moments later, a hand smashed his window and punched him. It’s Chloe, and she took a flashdrive from Lex that apparently contained information about her mom’s whereabouts. Unfortunately for the Friday girl, she didn’t remember anything the next day, but was surprised to see muddy footprints and dirty boots in her apartment. When she and Clark passed by that same road, they saw Lex’s car being investigated by the police. Curious, Chloe had Clark eavesdrop that there was a missing flashdrive. It all started to make sense to her now - the boots, foorprints, and a flashdrive among her things. Suspecting that something may have happened to her mom, Chloe went back to the mental facility only to be asked to leave because of a previous incident she caused (which she totally blanked on). Clark got the video feed and together they learned that her mom was transferred somewhere else, without Chloe’s knowledge.
Meantime, Moira was actually being held by Lex (no surprise there!) because he suspected that she was able to control the minds of other meteor freak. He woke her from her catatonic state with a drug and wanted to know more about her powers. Moira initially denied anything, and only begged to see Chloe. Traces of the meteor was found in her bloodstream, and also in Chloe’s, Lex revealed, and if Moira would allow herself to be tested, she will be reunited with her daughter. Reluctantly, Moira was placed in a cell with a boy with superhuman strength. With instructions from Lex to hurt her, the boy easily tossed a table towards Moira. Instinctively, she took a pen that belonged to the boy and telekinetically told him to sit down. So, she does have powers of mind control when she touches a possession of another meteor-infected person, but she’s never done it to anyone else other than Chloe, Moira confeses.
Lex demanded her help of bringing back an escapee, and she took clothes that belonged to him and controlled the man’s mind - to “find Lex Luthor, and kill him.” Well now, that person went to Lex Luthor’s mansion and found Lana! He wraps Lana around what looked like a spider-webby lasso and tossed her unconscious. Clark comes to the rescue, just in time, to stop the man. Chloe follows behind and tells her friend to immediately bring Lana to the hospital. Chloe then faces the perpetrator and, with gun pointing, realized that the man had no idea what happened. Realizing her mom might be behind it, she asks where Moira is.
When Lana came to, in the hospital, Clark was there waiting. She confessed to Clark how she’s lost the baby a few days after the wedding, and he’s the first person she’s told this to. Clark looked totally devastated. (This is where an emotionally-sensitive man would have held her hand or hugged her… but not our Clark, he was too restrained to even come close to her. Oh well). But then, Clark did become a little more emotional when he pressed Lana about her turn-about decision to marry Lex after she’s told him on the wedding day that she wanted Clark. And Lana dismissed it as jitters, basically telling her real love to leave it all behind them. *sigh*
When Clark returns home, Chloe enlists him, her “army of one” to go find her mom again in an abandoned hospital facility. But Moira sends her a mind-message to leave Smallville, which of course she had to follow. But Clark stood in her way, so brazen as she is, Chloe shoved a kriptonite toward him and made this superman powerless to stop her.
Unfortunately, Chloe was intercepted on her way out of town by Lex’s people and she woke up in the same room as Moira. Teary-eyed reunion as her mom explained why she decided to leave Chloe. Moira’s control over her daughter was so strong that her daughter mindlessly followed her instructions and hurt herself in the process. Later, Chloe deviced a way for them to get out by pretending to ask for help because her mom had fallen unconscious. Well, two guards holding the superhuman-strong kid intervened and Chloe was able to get something of his to her mom - mind control again, and she tells the kid to protect her and Chloe. He wasn’t smart enough, so she tells Chloe to get out of the place as more guards came after them. Chloe takes a big gun and bravely walks out toward the exit. When of course, Lex walks in and tells her he won’t allow her through. Without hesitation - Chloe cocks the gun and boom - sloooow motion as the bullet was whiizzzziiinnngggg toward Lex - when Clark appears - pushes Lex aside - gets Chloe out of there - and gets Moira out too!
Next scene, Chloe comes into Oliver’s apartment cheerful of being reunited with her mom. Clark warns her that Moira is fading away; the drug that Lex gave her only lasted for 24 hours. The loving daughter wanted a way to get her that drug but Moira stopped her. Believing she is a menace to society, a human weapon, Moira says goodbye to Chloe. And this is the tear-jerker as mother and daughter struggle to find peace with leaving each other again.
Chloe found courage to write an article about Lex Luthor’s evil schemes but what coincidence that Lex happened to walk into the Daily Planet just as she was finishing the piece. He threatened to put her to prison, or worse somewhere “where prison would look like a picnic” if she published her manuscript. Suffice it to say, our brave little Chloe got scared and went straight to Clark. On hearing this, Clark replied, “this is war”. Finally.
And in the hospital, Lana is resting when a doctor comes in with surprising news. He suspects her of taking a synthetic hormone that mimics a pregnancy, and that she used this to fake her pregnancy so she can marry “that” billionnaire. (And I thought, “how dare any doctor would accuse his patient of that?!”) Lana was surprised because she saw a sonogram of her baby, alive. Well, the doctor told her that whoever baby’s was that, wasn’t hers.
Lana was never pregnant to start with.
REVIEW - I liked this episode and was shamelessly tearful at the end. Great acting from everyone and especially from Alison Mack and Linda Carter (I’m a sucker for dramatic scenes). Totally great acting by Ms. Linda Carter, her eyes are just expressive. All in a heartbeat, she became confused, angry, heart-broken, malicious, and deadly!
But, “boring” was my nine-year old friend’s response. And maybe for younger kids watching this, there was barely any action at all, and Clark’s uses of his powers were predictable. But I thought the strength of this episode was the focus on Chloe’s life, and developing the storyline of Lana’s struggle. With the episode credits, that part Chloe’s story ended, except for where Clark decided it’s time to square off with Lex… enough being patient, and holding back, or trusting that Lex may still turn out having an ounce of goodness… maybe Clark’s nearing the crossroad of become arch-enemies with Lex Luthor… As for Lana, this episode provides some lead-in questions for what will happen to her and Lex - what will she do now that he may have manipulated her to marry him? And anticipation for the season-ender where someone dies.
